The author makes you feel so familiar with all the characters, you can see from their points of view and you can relate. I was sucked into this novel from the beginning and it felt like a wild ride as I was omniscient but not all knowing! I just didn't want to put it down and I was disappointed when the ride was over! I really wanted it to continue, to see what was next. Whether you like the occult, mysteries, horror stories, or just a good read, this book is compelling without being graphic or profane.I loved that the author doesn't make the reader feel stupid with all the occult knowledge in the book, the technical stuff was introduced without any pretense and didn't feel uncomfortable or hard to understand. The characters were believable and for the most part likeable but I would have liked to have had just a bit more insight into some of the major players. The Kindle edition had very few typos. I can't wait to read more from Johnny Worthen!

I loved this story. It's the bet kind of horror story,with the horror for the most part just below the surface between the lines, rather than hitting you over the head. I plan to read more of Worthen's works.
This book is definitely one of my favorites. I've rarely read an author who can shift so seamlessly in and out of his characters' physical and psychological worlds. Chilling and fantastic.
I have really enjoyed this book. The story starts to roll slowly, don't set it down after the first few pages. The terrifying character will remain in your mind long after the book is finished. I recommend this book and eagerly await the next novel from this author.
Worthen writes like a seasoned writer. He has a strong gift for prose and a deep understanding of his subject matter. I found myself picturing the author hammering away like a possessed man, cranking out pages like he had no choice. Beatrysel is scary as hell, so be warned, the other reviews saying they needed the lights on are not kidding. Worthen has a way of sticking in your head, whether by imagery or a turn of a phrase. His characters talk like real people, and you get the sense this novel could happen next door or around the corner. I look foward to his next work, and am curious to read his young adult novels. After swimming in the nexus of his occult work, I wonder how he bridges other genres. By the other reviews of his genre work, apparently quite well. Excellent read. 5 stars.
A very vivid, and original first novel by promising first-time author Johnny Worthen, this book tells the tale of a practitioner of High Magick, and the demon he creates. Dripping with engrossing descriptions of occult practice and invoking a charged and potent Portland, OR scene, it moves a murder mystery alongside meditations on the loss of love and betrayal. A very spooky and evocative read.
I noticed this book and realized it was from a new author ,as it turns out it the authors first book, so I decided to give it a read. I have to say that the genre is not really one that I read much of, but having said that this book was very good. It was well written with very colorful discriptive scenes played out with very intense drama. The characters are strong and well thought out.
I really enjoyed this book and once I started reading it I had a hard time putting it down. All in all a very worthy effort from a new author.
This book was fantastic! The plot is fast paced and the writing is very strong. The characters are also well thought out with their own issues that flow well along with this book.
I had to stop reading, for personal reasons, but when I finally had the time to continue, I wished I didn't stop in the first place.
The author's knowledge of the occult was also a big plus. After I finished the book I felt that I knew more about it.
